Mercury retrograde meaning: what it is, dates and myths
Mercury retrograde meaning explained: why Mercury seems to move backward, 2026 and 2027 dates with shadow periods, what astrology says and what to do.

Mercury retrograde is a stretch of about three weeks when the planet Mercury appears to drift backward against the stars. NASA calls it an apparent change: Mercury never reverses in its orbit. It happens three or four times a year. In astrology it is read as a time to review and double-check, not a proven cause of chaos.
This guide covers both sides honestly: the astronomy, a 2026 and 2027 table we calculated from NASA planetary data, the astrological meaning and habits worth keeping either way. It's the kind of sky-watching we built into Aura Zodiac, part of our iPhone app Aura.
What does Mercury retrograde mean?
Mercury retrograde means that, seen from Earth, the planet Mercury seems to stop, move backward through the zodiac for a few weeks, then stop again and resume its usual direction. Astronomers call this apparent retrograde motion. Nothing changes in Mercury's orbit. The effect comes from Earth and Mercury circling the sun at very different speeds. Mercury laps Earth about every 116 days, so the backward phase comes around three or four times a year and lasts roughly three weeks each time. In astrology the phrase carries far more weight. Mercury is the planet of communication, travel, contracts and technology, so a retrograde is traditionally read as a time when messages go astray, plans slip and old matters come back. Astrologers usually suggest using it to review, revise and reconnect rather than to launch something new. That is tradition and symbolism. There is no scientific evidence that a retrograde changes anything on Earth.
Why does Mercury look like it moves backward?
Because we watch it from a moving planet. NASA's StarChild explainer What does it mean for Mercury to be in retrograde? says that "Retrograde motion is an APPARENT change in the movement of the planet through the sky" and that the planet "does not physically start moving backwards in its orbit."
The same page says retrograde happens roughly when a faster planet catches up to and passes a slower one. Here Mercury is the fast one, overtaking Earth on the inside track, "like a car passing another on the highway," in the Old Farmer's Almanac's words.
The overtaking has a name: inferior conjunction, when Mercury lines up between Earth and the sun. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan's 2026 table of celestial phenomena puts them on March 7, July 13 and November 4. Each falls inside a retrograde window below, and the 2027 table shows the same pattern.
The key numbers:
- Orbit around the sun: 87.969 days, per the NASA Mercury Fact Sheet.
- Time between laps of Earth (synodic period): 115.88 days, same fact sheet.
- Length of each retrograde in 2026 and 2027: 20.4 to 24.2 days, from our NASA JPL Horizons calculation.
- How far Mercury backs up: about 9 to 16 degrees of the zodiac.
- Retrogrades per year: "three or four," as Farmers' Almanac puts it.
When is Mercury retrograde in 2026 and 2027?
In 2026, Mercury is retrograde from February 26 to March 20 in Pisces, June 29 to July 23 in Cancer and October 24 to November 13 in Scorpio. In 2027 it runs February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4 and October 7 to October 28. The Old Farmer's Almanac's Mercury retrograde dates agree.
We calculated every date and sign below from Mercury's hourly position in NASA JPL Horizons, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's ephemeris service. Dates are in Universal Time (UT).
| Year | Retrograde (UT) | Sign | Shadow period (UT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | February 26 to March 20 | Pisces | February 11 to April 9 |
| 2026 | June 29 to July 23 | Cancer | June 13 to August 7 |
| 2026 | October 24 to November 13 | Scorpio | October 4 to November 30 |
| 2027 | February 9 to March 3 | Pisces, back into Aquarius | January 25 to March 23 |
| 2027 | June 10 to July 4 | Cancer, back into Gemini | May 26 to July 19 |
| 2027 | October 7 to October 28 | Scorpio, back into Libra | September 17 to November 13 |
Signs follow Western (tropical) astrology. "Back into" means Mercury turns direct in the sign before the one it started in. As this guide goes up on October 29, 2026, Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio.
Where do sources differ? Mostly at the edges:
- Time zones. Both almanacs use Eastern Time, and Farmers' Almanac warns that "the station can shift by a day depending on your time zone." Japan's observatory, working in Japan time, lists July 24, 2026, July 5, 2027 and October 8, 2027 for three turns, a day later.
- Exact hours. Mercury barely moves around each turn, so careful tables can disagree by hours.
- Shadow dates. These vary most. Farmers' Almanac gives the autumn 2026 shadow as "roughly October 10 through November 29," while ours runs October 4 to 06:16 UT on November 30, still November 29 on the US West Coast.
What does Mercury retrograde mean in astrology?
In astrology, Mercury is the messenger. The Farmers' Almanac planetary table lists it as governing "Communication, technology, short travel, contracts," and a retrograde is read as those areas turning inward for a few weeks. Tradition, the same page says, encourages anything with the prefix "re": "Review, revise, repair, reconnect, revisit, return."
So a retrograde reads less as bad luck and more as a season for finishing, not starting: editing the draft, answering the old email, fixing the thing that keeps breaking.
The other half of the picture is your own chart. Your natal Mercury sits in one sign for life and is said to describe how you think and talk. New to charts? Start with our guide to sun, moon and rising signs. A retrograde in the sky is a transit: today's Mercury moving against your fixed placements, like the birth moon versus today's moon in our moon sign meaning guide.

What should you avoid during Mercury retrograde, and does it matter?
Popular advice says to avoid signing contracts, buying gadgets, booking tight travel and sending risky messages. Does any of it matter? Farmers' Almanac is blunt: "There is no measured evidence linking Mercury's apparent motion to lost keys, delayed flights, or failed hard drives." The reference summary on astrology and science adds that astrology "has not demonstrated its effectiveness in controlled studies."
Still, the classic checklist is sensible housekeeping that helps in any month:
- Back up your phone and laptop. Folklore aside, it's the backup you keep putting off.
- Double-check bookings. Confirm names, dates and times. Farmers' Almanac's advice on travel: avoid tight connections and "Leave a buffer."
- Reread messages before you send them. Check the recipient, the attachment and the tone.
- Read contracts twice. In the Almanac's words, "read the fine print twice and keep a copy."
- Finish before you start. Use the weeks for edits, repairs and overdue replies.
Want to test the idea yourself? Log your mood each day through a retrograde and the weeks around it, then compare. Our guide on how to start a mood journal shows a simple method, and a year in pixels view shows whether those weeks really look different. This is self-reflection, not medical or psychological advice.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period?
The shadow period is the stretch just before and after a retrograde, when Mercury moves through the part of the zodiac it will retrace, or has just retraced. Farmers' Almanac describes it as "roughly two weeks either side." Astrologers read the pre-shadow as a preview and the post-shadow as a wrap-up.
The edges are set by degrees, not days. Take autumn 2026, using our Horizons figures:
- Mercury turns retrograde on October 24 at 07:12 UT, at 20°59' Scorpio.
- It turns direct on November 13 at 15:53 UT, at 5°02' Scorpio.
- The pre-shadow starts when Mercury first reaches 5°02' Scorpio, on October 4.
- The post-shadow ends when it gets back to 20°59' Scorpio, on November 30.
So Mercury crosses the same strip of about 16 degrees of Scorpio three times: forward, backward, then forward again. Across all six retrogrades of 2026 and 2027, each shadow lasts 14 to 20 days, often more than two weeks. Like the retrograde itself, the shadow is an astrological convention, not an event astronomers measure.
How can you check today's retrogrades in Aura?
Aura Zodiac in Aura includes a Today's Sky list, described in the app as "Where each planet is in the sky today. The same for everyone, changing day by day." It shows the sign for each planet from the Sun to Saturn and labels any planet in its backward phase Retrograde. Below it, Your Birth Chart lists your own placements, fixed for life, so you can compare today's Mercury with yours.

Your personal daily horoscope is based on real planetary transits, and complete Aura Zodiac readings are part of Aura Pro. On the mood side, you pick up to three of 28 moods at once and add a journal entry, and Insights charts show your most frequent moods, your streaks and how your energy shifts over time. FAQ
Is Mercury in retrograde today?
Check today's date against the table above. The autumn 2026 retrograde runs October 24 to November 13. The 2027 windows are February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4 and October 7 to October 28. Allow a day either side for time zones.
How long does Mercury retrograde last?
About three weeks. By our NASA JPL Horizons calculation, the six retrogrades of 2026 and 2027 last 20 to 24 days. Add the shadows on either side and the whole cycle, as astrologers count it, runs 54 to 57 days, for example October 4 to November 30, 2026.
Is Mercury retrograde real?
As an appearance, yes. As a physical event, no. NASA's StarChild calls retrograde motion an apparent change: the planet does not move backward in its orbit. There is also no measured evidence that a retrograde causes delays, breakdowns or arguments.
Can you sign a contract during Mercury retrograde?
Yes. Nothing about a retrograde stops you, and no evidence links it to bad deals. If the tradition makes you uneasy, do what works in any month: read the fine print twice, check every name and date, and keep a copy.
